Expert Reviews And Opinions On Electronic Cigarettes Are Positive
Posted on February 9th, 2010 No commentsIf you aren’t sure about switching to the electronic cigarette, maybe what you need is insight from a different person’s perspective. Tobacco industries want to try as hard as they can to convince smokers that e-cigarettes should be avoided and that they pose health risks. At the same time, they make no comment about the obvious links of tobacco use to lung cancer, heart disease, etc. The more people switch to smoking alternatives, the more money tobacco companies will lose. It only makes sense that they do everything in their power to stifle attempts to provide alternatives to smoking.
There are some 4000+ chemicals in tobacco smoke, many of which are known to be carcinogenic. Tobacco smoke has been known to cause various kinds of cancer, heart disease, and early signs of wrinkles in the skin. Tobacco companies never advertise what their products contain. Doing so would be the equivalent of corporate suicide as it would undoubtedly result in people switching from tobacco to other forms of nicotine use.
Michael Siegel, a physician, researcher and professor at the Boston University School of Public Health had this to say in response to a senator’s proposed ban of electronic cigarettes:
“This is about as idiotic and irrational an approach as I have ever seen
in my 22 years in tobacco control and public health. A public policy
maker who touts himself as being a champion of the public’s health
as well as some of the leading national health advocacy organizations
is demanding that we ban what is clearly a much safer cigarette than
those on the market, but that we allow, protect, approve and institutionalize the really toxic ones.”
Any attempt to provide a safer alternative for something that’s been proven as detrimental to a person’s
health should never be met with such adversity. No tests have been able to show e-cigarettes as worse (or even just as bad) of an alternative to traditional cigarettes. Not only is there personal health to be taken into consideration, but the health of others as well. E-cigarettes, as opposed to real cigarettes, don’t give off a smoke that’s full of tar and other harmful chemicals. This makes it more pleasant to be around for nonsmokers, since the odor causing chemicals of cigarettes isn’t present in e-cigarettes.
Jacob Sullum is the senior editor at Reason magazine and a nationally syndicated columnist. He is also the author of For Your Own Good: The Anti-Smoking Crusade and the Tyranny of Public Health. He provided this quote, commenting on e-cigarettes:
“Telling smokers they may not use electronic cigarettes until they’re
approved by the FDA is like telling a floundering swimmer not to
climb aboard a raft because it might have a leak.”
This makes perfect sense. You can’t deny that nicotine itself isn’t healthy. When all things are considered, it does appear that e-cigarettes have some sort of benefits over traditional smoking. You obviously aren’t taking in all the harmful chemicals from normal cigarettes, but to ban their usage because the product doesn’t have a proven running history of x amount of years is just silly.
E cigarettes provide an alternative to people who no longer want to smell like they’ve been smoking or the stained teeth, fingers, and odorous breath that accompanies it. It’s definitely something worth looking into for people concerned about the health risks associated with tobacco smoke.
